Start with the setting and the people

An effective programme begins with an understanding of residents’ varied abilities, communication needs, preferences and daily routines. It also needs to fit staffing, space and the wider culture of the home.

The enquiry stage should stay proportionate. Individual clinical information needs appropriate privacy and professional handling, not a general web form.

Offer meaningful choice

Seated and standing options can make a session more inclusive, but choice is broader than position. Music, pace, group size, familiar routines and the opportunity to opt out can all affect whether movement feels welcoming.

Staff insight is valuable. They often know when residents are most engaged and what helps an activity succeed.

Make it sustainable

One energetic session can be enjoyable; a useful programme also considers what can continue between visits. Simple resources, staff education and regular review can help movement become part of everyday life.

Agree what success means before starting. Participation, confidence and consistency may be more useful measures than unrealistic promises about health outcomes.
